What is Face Mount Acrylic?

Face Mount Acrylic (sometimes called Diasec mounting or plexi face-mount) is a premium method of displaying photographic prints or artwork by bonding the front (face) of the print directly to a sheet of clear acrylic.

  • It’s a high-end display method where the photographic print (usually on metallic or archival photo paper) is mounted from the front directly to a sheet of clear acrylic using an optically clear adhesive.
  • Instead of printing directly on the acrylic, the photo is printed first on paper, then bonded to the back of the acrylic.
  • Often, a backing layer (white, black, Dibond, or aluminum) is added for protection and rigidity.

  1. Features and Benefits
  2. Stunning Depth & Clarity: The acrylic acts like a lens, adding depth and vibrancy to the image.
  3. Luxury Look: Widely used in galleries, museums, and fine art presentations.
  4. Protection: Seals the print, protecting it from UV light, moisture, and dust.
  5. Durability: More archival and long-lasting compared to direct print on acrylic.
  6. Customization: Can be combined with standoffs, hidden mounts, or float frames.

Difference vs. Direct Acrylic Print

  • Direct Acrylic Print: The image is printed directly on the back of the acrylic surface.
  • Face Mount Acrylic: The photo is printed on premium paper and then mounted behind the acrylic, resulting in higher sharpness, color depth, and professional quality.

Gloss Acrylic Prints

Gloss acrylic prints are photo prints displayed under a high-gloss acrylic surface, which enhances vibrancy, sharpness, and depth. The glossy finish gives images a sleek, contemporary look, often preferred for modern interiors and galleries.

Advantages

Brilliant Colors: The glossy surface intensifies saturation and contrast, making images pop.

High Definition: Enhances sharpness and detail, giving photographs a crystal-clear look.

Depth Effect: Creates a sense of dimensionality, as if the image is embedded within the acrylic.

Modern Aesthetic: Sleek, polished appearance perfect for luxury or contemporary spaces.

Fingerprints & Dust: More visible on glossy surfaces, requiring more frequent cleaning.

Not Always Ideal for Every Image: Works best with vibrant, colorful, or high-contrast photos; subtle or matte artworks may lose their intended look.

Easy to Clean: Smooth, non-porous surface can be wiped with a soft cloth.

Disadvantages

Glare & Reflections: The shiny finish can reflect lights, windows, or surroundings, which may distract from the artwork.
